Biography: JOHN BILDERBECK was born in Madras and educated at the Roman Catholic College in Pondicherry. After the death of his uncle, the wealthy merchant De Monte, he was sent to the London Mission School in Black Town, and afterwards to England to be trained for the London Mission Society ministry. He was ordained on 22 December 1831 at White Row Chapel Spitalfields and arrived back in Madras on May 1st 1832. He was the agent of the LMS at Chittoor and Wallajahbad from 1835 till 1841, when he resigned from the LMS and joined the CMS. He was ordained deacon by the Bishop of Madras, and worked in connection with the S.P.G. He was ordained priest in 1843; and in the following year went to England and transferred his services to the C.M.S., with which Society he continued for thirty- six years till his death ion June 30th 1880. His work was almost entirely in Madras itself as priest of St. Paul's Church, Vepery.
